I’m making my way through Stephenson’s latest 1k page epic mega opus, and what do I happen upon some 160 pages in but a quick over the shoulder reference to my old home. So far the book is quite engaging: the story of an MMO, the russian mafia, and as is usual for Stephenson, techy characters that are just remarkably real. I’ve never met the author, but either he’s a complete geek, or he has dissected the brain of one and keeps it in a jar.
So Neal, if you happen to read this, a huge thanks. You completely made my day. Slashdot has been mentioned many many times over the years, but a Stephenson novel is damn near the top of the pile… Neil Gaiman trumps you for putting it in Sandman… but only just barely barely. If you ever decide to George Lucas Snow Crash, you probably could trump him tho. I’m just sayin’.

My favorite was its context of use — “Slashdot. (Story detail)” — no explanation, the fact that everyone in that room (or private jet) knows exactly what it is.
Yeah, it was the tossed off nature of the quip that pleased me the most.
