Apple was founded the year I was born. Steve Jobs came back to Apple the month I was starting a little website became my first career. He resigned from Apple the same day that I resigned from Slashdot. I learned of the news from my wife who read it on her iPhone. I type this on a MacBook Pro.
Without Jobs, Pixar might never have broke free from Lucasfilm: advancing computer animation beyond universities and experimental film.
Without Jobs, NeXT wouldn’t have happened, and Tim Berners-Lee might not have got around to stringing together 3 w’s and the internet would have spent years longer as the exclusive domain of scientists.
Without Jobs, the amazing mojo being built inside Xerox’s PARC research center might have stayed hidden there. The mouse. The GUI.
He might not have been an engineer like Woz or an artist like John Lasseter or a programmer like Ed Catmull, or a designer like Jon Ive, but he knew skill when he saw it. And somehow he managed to make them all better.
The world is a better place for his time here.
