You've been describing a way of aggregating information which isn't happening anywhere right now, perhaps because it's more focused on helping the consumers of information than the providers...You know, I've been following you since the Chips N Dips days (came across your site while searching for Afterstep goodies; damn, that was a long time ago), and something's been bugging me for a lot of that time. Can we all just 'fess up and admit that you damn near invented blogging? Everywhere I look, every blog I read, to one degree or another it's a pretty faithful copy of the original /. page. From /. itself, K5, all the MT blogs, then Wordpress and a million others, and they all lay themselves out, have the same features, and basically just flat out look and act like "my version of Slashdot."Ok, you've left it behind. Probably a harder decision than any of us can imagine, but you did it. What now? Do the same thing you did then: follow your interest, scratch your itch, and make the 'net a better place for all of us.You don't have to abandon your family; you don't have to do it all yourself any more. "Select and direct," as my wife is fond of saying. It seems obvious to me that you're still seeing things on the web the way they should be rather than the way they are. Follow the muse, man; make it happen. Somebody has to, and you've already done it once. Might as well do it again.

I’m (momentarily) at a loss for words (if you knew me, you’d know what a big deal that is).

Ok, moment’s passed.

Have you not been laying out over the last several posts what it is you want (need?) to do? Given your broad range of experience from /. , going and working for someone else seems an odd path. However, I do hear you about being a "family man" and that has influenced the choices of a number of friends of mine towards "corporate" employment. In the pursuit of that extra bit of "security" I have to wonder if my friends are really doing what they want to do, vs what they think they need to do to satisfy our cultural family obligations. In the end I hope that you are doing what you love.

When I joked that I might write romance novels, I actually felt more energy for writing fiction than I did for programming, at that moment. Writing fiction doesn't come with health benefits, unfortunately. It's probably time for me to consider myself self-employed. Start using the techniques I used to teach others to develop a product or find an employer. My mission has been to help programmers work with less pain, but I want to go back to basics: to provide tools for creative people (including children), including teaching and learning tools.

A lot of what you say is echoed in my recent life. He didn't invent the computer, didn't invent the GUI, didn't invent the mouse, didn't invent the MP3 player, didn't invent the cell phone, didn't invent the tablet computer. He took other people's ideas and technology, put a pretty face on it, marked it up 100 percent and turned it over to marketing.

I can’t see why the fuss over Steve Jobs. I explained I haven't read the biography, but I likened him to Thomas Edison; Edison didn't invent the light bulb, but he collected the people who could and did. Likewise, Steve Jobs didn't invent much on his own, but he collected people who could and did.

My grandmother asked me about the biography and about Steve Jobs last night. So, why the hell would anyone go out drinking? Get drunk, lose your life! Puts an entirely different spin on rohypnol. Serial killing prostitutes would be everywhere. Fall asleep next to someone you don't trust with your _life_? Never.

The thing that struck me was that there was no security on the transfer, it can be performed completely involuntarily. I thought this looked interesting, too, but based on your recommendation, I'll hold off until this is released. On a separate note, I've really appreciated your posts over the last month or so. Your in-depth look at information consumption and the current set of available tools has been quite insightful. You've turned me on to Google Reader, and despite the limitations you mention, and it's really made keeping up with things a lot easier. Hopefully the tools will continue to improve.

Thanks for the review!
